True to Phoenix's alternating historical and science-fiction narrative structure, this third volume contains two self-contained tales, one of Japan's distant feudal past (320-350 A.D.), the other in the world's far-flung future (2577 A.D.).

In "Yamato," Tezuka weaves a bloody Shakepearean morality play about one king's vanity--the construction of an extravagant imperial tomb and his attempt to remove his rival, Takeru of Kumaso, by sending his son, Oguna, to assassinate him. Betrayal heaps upon betrayal, though, when Prince Oguna falls in love with Takeru's tomboyish sister, Kajika. Will love overcome filial duty?

In "Space," Orion, a sub-light speed rocket heading towards earth crashes into a meteorite. The ship becomes unable to fly and four people manage to escape, including Dr. Saruta (from A Tale of the Future) and Nana. Each of the passengers escapes in an individual escape pod. However the pods only have enough food for half a year and enough air for a year and a half. Possibilities of survival are...
